Street renaming of Terrace Avenue
August 09, 2022
2030 Vision Goals
#4.Develop and Implement
Successful Partnerships
#5.Engage in Proactive
Communication
Background
•Terrace Avenue is a public street situated on the west side of
the city located on both north and south of Barton Road .
•The street is within a commercial zone and has sections that
are within the City of Colton.
•There are other surrounding streets that are mainly used by
residents including Grand Terrace Road that runs parallel with
Terrace Road and often confused by motorists because of the
close name resemblance.
•City staff performed multiple observations of vehicles in the
area.
Recommendation
•To mitigate the pass through of commercial vehicles over 5
tons in residential streets along Grand Terrace Road, staff
recommends that the City Council rename Terrace Avenue to
divert all heavy vehicles to the newly renamed street and
restrict truck traffic from using Grand Terrace Road .
•The renaming process will be in consensus with the City of
Colton street renaming guidelines since a portion of the street
is within the Colton city limits.
Recommendation
•Staff would like to present Council with four recommended
names that would be appropriate for renaming and would like
for Council to select a name so staff can begin the renaming
process.The names are the following:
•Parsons Avenue (In commemoration of Pete Parsons,
Grand Terrace volunteer and primary radio announcer for
the Grand Terrace radio station).
•River Trail Drive
•Commercial Avenue
•Old Farm Road
Recommendation
GT Radio AM-1640 Radio Station History
The City of Grand Terrace has a public service radio station AM-1640. The radio station first
aired on June 30th, 2009. The station was originally envisioned by Vic Pfennighausen, whose
technical expertise made the station possible. The original primary announcer and script writer
was Grand Terrace resident and city volunteer Pete Parsons, bringing 30 years of experience to
the position.
The station is licensed by the Federal Communications Commission as a “Traveler’s Aid and
Information Station.” Some of the interesting topics include local history, geography, seasonal
safety tips, EOC/CERT information, upcoming local city initiated/city sponsored events, and
information on nearby daytrips, earthquake preparedness, water conservation, and
neighborhood watch.
Pete Parsons passed away on July 7, 2019, and his wife, Connie Parsons has continued Pete’s
legacy by continuing to volunteer as the City’s primary announcer and script writer.
Recommendation
•Alternatively, the City Council may also select a name not
listed.
Fiscal Impact
•There will be no fiscal impact to the FY 2022-23 Adopted
Budget General Fund.
