•The State Building Standards Commission publishes the California
Fire Code every 3 years:
•Contains regulations that pertain to fire safe building standards.
•Becomes effective throughout California 180 days after publication.
•San Bernardino County Fire Ordinance 23-01 was adopted as amended
on February 20, 2023, by the Board of Directors of the San Bernardino
County Fire Protection District.
•After adoption, cities must ratify the ordinance through an official action for
it to become effective.

•Pursuant to Health and Safety Code section 13869, the San
Bernardino County Fire Protection District may adopt by reference
the 2022 Edition of the California Fire Code and may also make
local amendments as necessary based on local climatic,
geological, and/or topographical conditions.
•Significant amendments to the 2022 Edition of the California Fire
Code, that are included in the adopted ordinance based on local
climatic, geological, and/or topographical conditions include:

•Additional operational permits:
•Battery storage (carry over from 2019 ord.)
•Commercial cooking operations (carry over from 2019 ord.)

•Smoke control/exhaust systems
•Refrigeration systems
•Dust collection

•Guidance on the minimum specifications of road width, surfaces,
grades, etc. to allow various types of fire vehicles to safely access
roads. (carry over from the 2019 ord.)
•Update to the mandated font size of a building address (as visible
from the street) based on the size of the building. (carry over from
the 2019 ord.)
•Clarified requirements regarding water flow when building a
structure and the spacing of fire hydrants in commercial, industrial,
and multi-family developments. (carry over from the 2019 ord.)

•Updates the requirement for fire sprinkler systems for buildings of
5,000 square feet or greater. (carry over from the 2019 ord.)
•Amended requirements stating emergency responder radio coverage
must be installed in existing warehouse buildings where dispatch
radios are unable to communicate.If radios can communicate within
the warehouse, separately installed radio coverage is not required.
•Amended the storage height limit of compost and biomass (from 25
feet to 12 feet) at commercial facilities.This will allow more efficient
fire suppression activities using fire engines.
