2000-17 RESOLUTION NO. 2000- 17 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GRAND TERRACE, CALIFORNIA, CREATING TOBACCO- FREE ZONES AT CITY PARKS WHEREAS,smoking is responsible for the premature deaths of 434,000 Americans each year from lung cancer, heart disease, respiratory illness, and other diseases; secondhand smoke is responsible for an additional 53,000 deaths among nonsmokers; and WHEREAS, the U.S. Surgeon General has declared that nicotine is as addictive as cocaine or heroin; no other addictive product or drug or cancer-causing product or drug is sold; and WHEREAS, more than three million minors consume more than 947 million packs of cigarettes annually in the United States and over 29 million packs of cigarettes are sold to Californian children annually; and WHEREAS, nearly 90 percent of all tobacco users start well before the age of 18 and the average child smoker-started at age 13 and was smoking daily by 14 'h; and WHEREAS, this City has a substantial interest in the health and welfare of youth and kids, and to help role model positive behavior to the youth; NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Grand Terrace, does hereby resolve as follows: SECTION 1. Richard Rollins Park, Pico Park and T.J. Austin Park in the City of Grand Terrace are Tobacco-Free Zones. Appropriate signage will be posted,declaring the parks a tobacco-free zone.
