2014-50 Page 1 of 3 RESOLUTION 2014— 50 ( A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GRAND TERRACE, CALIFORNIA, SUPPORTING THE "HEALTHY CITY" SPONSORSHIP APPLICATION PREPARED BY THE FOUNDATION OF GRAND TERRACE AND IN SUPPORT OF A HEALTHY ACTIVE LIVING COMMUNITY WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Grand Terrace, supports policies that focus on health and wellness and healthier lifestyles in all communities; and WHEREAS, many agencies have adopted policies and programs that promote healthy lifestyles by making their communities walkable, promoting physical activity, encouraging access to fresh foods and vegetables in city, county or school facilities; and WHEREAS, the Foundation of Grand Terrace, in collaboration with various community partners, including the City of Grand Terrace, proposes a wide variety of healthy city initiatives, including a Family Health and Fitness Day; and WHEREAS, there are important, long-term community benefits to be gained by encouraging healthy lifestyles, including a decrease in the rate of obesity and its negative health-related impacts and cost; and WHEREAS, the Foundation of Grand Terrace Family Health and Fitness Day will include activities such as a 5K Run, a Health and Fitness Fair at the City of Grand Terrace Fitness Park and skills clinics run by the City's Youth Sports Leagues; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Grand Terrace and other community partners, can work together to ensure there are safe places for residents to be active, such as parks, ball fields, gyms, bike paths, trail systems, and recreation centers; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Grand Terrace supports the development of healthy neighborhoods that provide places where walking and bicycling Resolution No. 2014-50 Page 2 of 3 are safe and convenient for all residents; and a place where residents live in a clean, optimal environment free of hazards or pollutants; and WHEREAS, our health is affected by where we live, work and play and, in order for our residents to be healthy, we need to live in healthy communities; and WHEREAS, regional collaboration leads to developing and forging strong relationships, and communities can maximize resources ensuring that healthier community development occurs; and WHEREAS, local schools play a significant role in enhancing neighborhood health and safety, the City should commit to provide continuous support in assuring that children have safe routes to schools; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Grand Terrace that the City strongly and enthusiastically supports the "Healthy City" t Sponsorship application prepared by the Foundation of Grand Terrace and submitted to the County of San Bernardino Department of Public Health; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Grand Terrace will work with other cities, County departments, community partners, and regional agencies to adopt preventive measures, develop initiatives and programs to fight obesity and chronic disease, and create or support existing coalitions, such as the State of California and County of San Bernardino Healthy Communities, which collectively advance community health and wellness.
