"We're proud to support the thousands of volunteer hours that they've already put into the Redlands skatepark. Although their work is not finished,we trust that our showcase grant can help push this project forward." "The volunteer advocates established powerful relationships with influential.community leaders, laid out a plan to produce the best possible skatepark, and pursued that vision relentlessly," he said. "Everyone on the Tony Hawk Foundation staff and board of directors were very impressed with what they've been able to accomplish so far." The City Council in 2013 pledged $200,000 in matching funds from the palmetto grove sale proceeds for the skatepark. "The Friends of Redlands Skatepark project has been working on this important project for years," said Peter.Whitley, programs director for the Tony Hawk Foundation, in,an emailed statement. "We're.proud. to support the thousands of volunteer hours-that they've already put into the Redlands skatepark. Although their work is not finished, we trust that our showcase grant can help push this project . fo rwa rd." Whitley said the Redlands project stood out because of its unparalleled community engagement and fundraising activities. r The Friends of Redlands Skatepark was recently awarded a $25,000 grant from the Tony Hawk Foundation to build the Redlands Skatepark at Sylvan Park. Maureen Perez, co-founder of Friends of Redlands Skatepark, or FORS, a group of skateboarders and advocates raising money to build the long- desired skatepark. The group has raised nearly$50,000, a sum that includes the grant, through various fundraisers. The grant is by far the largest milestone in the campaign, Perez said. The city has spent around $115,000 for the design contract with California Skateparks and the environmental review. The project is expected to be built in two phases. The first phase, about 10,000 square feet, is estimated to cost about$530,000, Sullivan said. The second phase, about 5,000 square feet, is estimated to cost about$260,000, he said. Councilman Jon Harrison, who has been advocating for the project and working with fundraisers, said they will continue to look for community support as well as other grant opportunities to reach their goal. "It's a matter of helping the community step up somewhat and that we're successful in applying for some other grant sources," he said. The skatepark is meant to be all-wheel, accommodating skateboarders, skaters, bicyclists and scooter riders. Though the cost estimate for construction may seem high, Perez said, "It's not high for the caliber of park we're trying to build that will sufficiently serve our community-And then you're going to anticipate people coming from other communities as well." The Tony Hawk Foundation grant"really speaks well of Redlands' effort to get a skatepark and I think it will kind of launch the momentum we need ...to really engage the community in the process," Harrison said. "So we're in motion." .1 k s e, the undersigned, ask the Grand Terrace City Council to change the Grand Terrace Dog mark hours of closure from all day Wednesday to % day.
